It is the high peak for patchwork quilts
in the world. It is one of the oldest forms of human
craftsmanship: it was born out of need and necessity, and
women made it into beauty. It has grown into folk art in the
USA. In Hungary, where there is a very rich culture of
embroidery, there was no place for patches. It has always
been associated with poverty and indecency. It was a
difficult beginning to plant the modern perception of
patchwork. It was believed that trousers were being mended
when art was created.
After some early exhibitions the guild
was established in 1989 and Hungarian women had been
captivated by the patches. The association became member of
the world patchwork organization, accepting the common goal
of ‘sewing the world together’.
We had been wanting to present our own
heritage that led us to call for a special project employing
Hungarian blue-dyed techniques with quilts. The most
beautiful pieces of this project can be seen in this
exhibition in Vilnius.
An artist Anna Dolányi, who is known as
one of the initiators of patchwork in Hungary, and artist
Ilius Kokai, who has been working on patchworks for 13
years, are going to
present artworks made by Hungarian patchwork guild members for the Lithuanian audience at „ARTima
gallery“. Their quilts combine rich traditions of Hungarian
embroidery and the modern perception of the blue-print
patchworks. The artists will invite everyone to join them at
workshop, where they will be sharing their experience in
patchwork making. As well the participants will have an
opportunity to try making patchworks themselves.
